About Our Atascocita Location (Harris County):
Gateway’s largest facility, Atascocita is a residential correctional center focused solely on substance use treatment for court-ordered clients. With 12 buildings and nearly 500 clients, the facility provides a structured, secure environment without armed guards. Staff work collaboratively in a team of 170, including counselors, probation officers, and support staff. The location is undergoing major renovations to become a state-of-the-art treatment center. We foster a supportive culture with team-building activities, recognition programs, and a strong mission-driven focus on recovery and rehabilitation.
Work Schedule: Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday from 6:30 am - 8:30 pm
- On-call rotation required (Monday–Monday); responds to calls via provided phone to offer clinical guidance. Rare onsite coverage may be needed in the event of staffing shortages.
Overview: The nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive patient care from admission through discharge, including administering medications, conducting daily assessments in coordination with physician appointments, and monitoring vital signs and withdrawal symptoms. Duties also include completing intake assessments, performing wound care, drawing labs, and responding to medical emergencies. Nurses follow established protocols, support discharge planning, and provide patient education on medications, treatments, and healthy lifestyle habits. This role requires accurate documentation in the EMR system and maintaining professional, compassionate interactions with patients in various stages of recovery.
Registered Nurses are responsible for:
- Administer prescribed medications accurately and in compliance with established protocols and physician orders.
- Conduct daily patient visits in coordination with physician appointments, including performing assessments, monitoring vital signs, and implementing follow-up care as needed.
- Carry out medical protocols and procedures as directed by healthcare providers and in accordance with facility guidelines, including responding to changes in patient conditions.
- Provide wound care management, including cleaning, dressing, and monitoring healing progress per clinical standards.
- Complete intake assessments to evaluate new patients’ medical and behavioral health status upon admission.
- Perform routine and stat laboratory draws, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and timely transport to designated labs.
- Educate patients about medications, treatments, and healthy lifestyle habits.
- Monitor and document patient vital signs, withdrawal symptoms (using tools like CIWA or COWS), and overall clinical status.
- Respond to medical emergencies, perform crisis intervention, and escalate care when needed.
- Provide empathetic support and maintain therapeutic boundaries with patients in various stages of sobriety.
- Maintain thorough and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Support discharge planning with medication reconciliation and client education.
Job Requirements:
- Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or graduate of an accredited nursing program with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
- Minimum of two years of experience working as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
- Previous experience working with individuals with substance use disorders is highly preferred yet not required.
Physical Requirements:
- Normal or corrected vision and some color vision, necessary to read thermometers, blood pressure gauges, dipstick analysis results, and so forth; and to see and evaluate presented symptoms and injuries (critical).
- Communication abilities necessary to gather and exchange information with clients and staff in person or by telephone provide care instructions, and schedule appointments (critical).
- Proofreading and checking documents for accuracy, and reading reports, on a regular basis (critical).
- Ability to respond to telephone, pages and intercoms (critical).
- Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate instruments and syringes, apply bandages or sterile wipes, and accept and pass instruments and specimens; and touch sensitivity necessary to detect pulse, palpate body areas, and perform treatments with minimal client discomfort (critical).
- Depending on Center assigned, ability to drive vehicle to various locations (essential).
- Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and/or audit information and data on a regular basis (essential).
- Ability to stoop and bend, ability to reach and grab with arms and hands, and ability to walk and move about for up to two hours at a time (desirable)
Compensation:
- $38.00 per hour plus on-call pay
- Gateway Foundation conducts annual reviews including merit increases.
