GENERAL SUMMARY:

Diagnoses emotional and mental disorders in clients, and treats or directs the treatment to effect improved psychological adjustment.  Orders diagnostic tests and may prescribe medication for treatment.  Assesses clients' progress; participates in treatment planning as necessary.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Acts as designated Medical Director to coordinate medical and psychiatric services at assigned program.
  • Organizes data concerning client's family, medical history, and onset of symptoms obtained from client, relatives, and other treatment team members (i.e., psychologists, social workers, and/or physician).
  • May evaluate client and review physical exam notes to determine general condition of client.
  • May order laboratory and other special diagnostic tests and evaluates data obtained.
  • Determines nature and extent of mental disorder, and formulates treatment program.
  • Treats or directs treatment of client, utilizing variety of psychotherapeutic methods and medications.
  • Records client progress and enters all pertinent client information into medical records according to established procedures.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to other treatment team members and paraprofessional personnel in the process of providing therapy to clients.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities as appropriate.
  • May be required to occasionally travel to various locations for reviews and/or audits and advisory committee meetings.

 

Requirements:

  • A medical degree, completion of psychiatric residency, and Board Certification or eligibility.
  • Current medical licensure required by the State of Illinois.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of the principles of physical growth and development and psychosocial development; the ability to assess and interpret client data and identify individual needs; to provide health-related care appropriate to the client population.
  • Work requires the analytical ability to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems or design relatively complex systems and programs.
  • Work requires the ability to develop and write instructional/training materials, prepare detailed assessments of client referrals, conduct individual or group psychotherapy sessions, or perform other duties requiring a comparable level of communication skill.
